Using a sort of ‘Faggot Sensibility’, the sculptures I create mimic traits found in environments that promote idealized masculinity. While considering the way I conceive my own transness, I became interested in creating work that could speak the same language as a trans body – without the presence of an actual body. Combining materials such as wood, silicone, handmade collectibles, and other pre-owned objects, I offer up dissemblance as the toolbox for signalling a desire to function in another way. Through the creation of half-way-representational objects, these sculptures confront the viewer’s expectations of legibility that they project onto the bodies around them. Drawing from archival research and object history, my work intertwines the actual and immaterial ideas we hold about bodies while simultaneously addressing the influence of the patriarchy on queer subcultures.
