Synopsis

A young witch tries to fit in her new school of magic while learning to accept her cultural identity.

Artist’s Statement

This film was inspired by my experience as an immigrant child, not quite fitting in an unfamiliar environment. For the longest time, I wanted to be like the other kids around me and often neglected and disregarded my cultural heritage. Over time, I learned to appreciate and be proud of who I am and where I came from. The concept of Mahika came from my love of the fantasy genre and magical girls.

Jodi ‘Chloe’ Cabading is a Filipina Canadian animator based in Vancouver. Chloe studied 2D + Experimental Animation at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she earned her degree in Bachelor of Media arts. Her practice revolves around character driven storytelling and animation, focusing mostly on rough animation, storyboarding and character design. She strives to develop her career as a 2D animator and one day develop her own animated TV series.
