Inhabiting a space of hybridity, SKIN explores Chinese diasporic identity by reimagining traditions from Ming Dynasty ceramics. By attaching blue motifs printed on acetate sheets to white ceramic vessels that have been assembled as halves, my intervention with the material speaks to themes of dislocation through time and place. The pieces are installed with overhead light to create reflections from the acetate and reference fragmented memory, as I retrace the history of my cultural identity. The work enforces the dual function of vessels as bodies that hold physical material, but also have potential to be symbols.
SKIN is my attempt to merge my ceramic and digital practices to create a dialogue between the permanence of fired clay and the fragility of acetate.
